Substance Painter
Substance Painter is a nice powerful tool for painting and editing texture onto 3D models. Until fairly recently, most of the material creation process would have been done just editing the 2D texture (e.g. in Photoshop), so it’s easy to see how much more intuitive this approach is.
Substance Painter has a free 30-day trial you can sign up for, and the download is https://www.substance3d.com/download/ available here (with a requirement to sign up).

Layer Painter (add-on for Blender)
A Blender add-on which is less sophisticated than Substance Painter, but much cheaper (US$20), and is being improved all the time. Downloaded via https://blendermarket.com/products/layerpainter
